Air dry clay trilobites, creatures and bugs...

Check out the process of making trilobite and bug creatures with air dry clay and matte fluid acrylic.

After hand sculpting the overall shape I began to add the features.  As I was using air-dry clay I could easily add plastic eyes as there was no firing process.

After a thorough drying process I began layering the acrylic paints. I used matte fluid acrylics and began with a solid base layer of Antique Green, focussing initially on the head.

I then began to build up layers of colour and detail by adding Hooker's Green and Pearl White.  I used a stiff brush to stipple the colour and create small spots on the skin's surface to give the skin texture and interest.

Then I applied the same technique to the body applying roughly three layers of paint.

There were many areas, particularly around all of the legs and spine, where paint had to be blotted in to ensure coverage.

And here is the completed work.

For the next piece I created a simpler form and used the same techniques.

And here are the two final pieces together!
